Alex Knapp Named Real Estate Head at Norway’s Wealth Fund

Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), the entity responsible for managing Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, has appointed Alex Knapp as the new Global Head of Real Estate. Knapp, who currently serves as Chief Investment Officer for Hines’ European division, will take on this key role starting June 16, 2025. His appointment marks the culmination of a comprehensive search to find a leader capable of overseeing NBIM’s substantial real estate portfolio, a major component of the Government Pension Fund Global.

The sovereign wealth fund, one of the world’s largest, holds a diverse range of investments, including a significant allocation in real estate. This includes both listed and unlisted properties around the globe, with a particular focus on high-value commercial properties. As the new Global Head of Real Estate, Knapp will oversee the strategy, management, and development of these assets, ensuring the continued growth and performance of NBIM’s real estate investments.

Knapp brings a wealth of experience to this role, having led Hines’ European real estate investments for several years. He is known for his strong track record in managing large-scale property portfolios and his ability to adapt to changing market dynamics. His deep understanding of the European real estate market, combined with his global perspective, makes him well-equipped to drive NBIM’s real estate operations forward.

One of the key areas of focus for Knapp will be integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into the fund’s real estate investment strategies. NBIM has made significant strides in incorporating sustainability into its investments, and Knapp’s leadership is expected to further this commitment. He will play a pivotal role in ensuring that NBIM’s real estate investments not only deliver strong financial returns but also align with the fund’s long-term objectives for responsible and sustainable investment.

As the real estate sector continues to evolve globally, Knapp’s leadership will be critical in positioning NBIM to achieve continued success and resilience. His expertise in managing complex real estate portfolios will be instrumental as the fund navigates the challenges and opportunities of the ever-changing global property market.
